20/20 WC: India v South Africa
by Wakuba on Jun.16, 2009, under News
The defending hosts India take on South Africa tonight having already been eliminated from the tournament. With their scarily passionate fans at home already burning effigies of the players, they will be desperate to finish the campaign with a win. And they may actually get some help from the Proteas, who have already qualified. It’s possible they may rest players, shuffle the batting order, or even not be totally motivated to win (they could actually face a weaker side if they lose – this will be decided by the SL v NZ game currently in progress).
And India can beat anyone on their day – they, despite their exit, still arguably possess the strongest side in the tournament. If Yuvraj, Pathan and Dhoni fire they can beat anyone… and at 13/10 represent decent value.

One best stands out in this winner-takes-all contest; and that is in the Netherlands top batsman market.
Each Way is suicidal in 2020; any batsman at long odds can come in and smash a few off an over or two. And someone more than capable of doing that for Holland is Jeroen Smits. He is their wicketkeeper and occasional opener – but came in down the order against England, hence his lengthening to 66-1. Coral offer 1/5 1st 3 EW terms – and that is hugely attractive, whether he opens or comes in as a late hitter.

England look to have snuck through after their shock defeat to the Netherlands, which is a relief for us with Bopara as top bat – the more games they play, the likelier the cream rises to the top…
Today sees Bangladesh take on Ireland, and Sri Lanka play Australia – who are fighting to stay in after their heavy defeat to the West Indies. We’ll stay away from the second game; although Sri Lanka are tempting at 6/4, Australia must win.
In the other game, however, Ireland look hugely appealing at 4.3. As we said before the tournament, and as the Netherlands, the West Indies, and Scotland should have proved, this form of the game is primed for upsets. Bangladesh are not a side to be relied on, although they do have talented players; and Ireland boast a handful of county players in their ranks. They are more than capable of beating the Bangladeshis, and at greater than 3/1 are definitely worth following.
Ireland @ 4.3 (Betfair) – 1 point
