Lewis Hamilton is the red hot favourite for this years Sports Personality award, currently trading at 1.61 on Betfair.

However, Hamilton is hardly a darling of the people – he’s seen by the public as arrogant and aloof, and lacking any endearing characteristics. Cold, in a word.

So the value here may be with an outsider – and our tip is to go with Chris Hoy. He won three medals at the Olympics – which the public really took to heart, the patriotism was incredible – and he has the Scottish vote nailed on.

He is currently available at just over 6.2 on Betfair – he’s come in from 7/1 a few weeks back (always a good sign in anything judged by the public – if more people think a selection is going to win, more people back it, more people vote for it – a snowball effect) but still represents value.

Sports Personality is judged on the 14th December, so if you don’t mind tieing up a few antepost funds, and are partial to long odds, get on.
